John Yoo has provided legal justification for enhanced interrogation technique torture. He is an advocate of the dictatorship-like “commander-in-chief”-understanding of president’s powers in “war times”. Yoo was a part and has been questioned in a legal investigation concerning the torture practice of the CIA. The so-called “ethics investigation” seems to have been stopped without really pursuing and prosecuting the bad guys, or even setting clear limits to such legal council as they delivered it. Ich fürchte, dass die US-Bevölkerung erst nach weiteren drei Jahren merken wird, dass Obama nicht geliefert hat, was sie von ihm verstanden hatten. Wieder einmal eine herrliche Karikatur von Amerikas meistgesuchten politischen Karikaturisten.
Der Bürgermeister von Clarksville Johnny Piper hatte eine dieser hysterischen Emails weitergeleitet, in der zu einem Protest gegen die angeblich neu von Barack Obama eingeführten Briefmarken aufgerufen wurde. Die Briefmarken – die bereits seit 2001 mehrmals aufgelegt wurden – erinnern an die beiden muslimischen Feste. Auf den Postmarken ist in arabischer Kalligraphie “Eid Mubarak” aufgedruckt – der Wunsch eines “gesegneten Festes” also. Piper hatte angemerkt, dass er die Email als reine Information weitergeleitet hatte. Seine Rechtfertigung liest sich indes recht interessant:

The story about Firas is reaching German language media – and apparently, some facts are lost in translation or in the improvisation attempts of German newspapers..
How shocked was I to see, that the guy, who famously modified an Obama picture on a Times-magazine into the Batman-foe “The Joker” played by the late Heath Ledger is in fact a direct cousin of mine. Though i never met him in person i know his mother very well. The picture of Joker-Obama was made popular by some yet-unknown guy who captioned it with “socialism”, retouched some background out and hung it all over Los Angeles. Yesterday the story about the origin of the image broke in the Los Angeles Times.
Barack Obama:
“Nothing will be gained by spending our time and energy laying blame for the past.”
The only rationale for not holding the previous administration accountable is the own fear of being held accountable one day.
Lächerlich finde ich, dass sich jeder zweite Politiker mit “Migrationshintergrund” nun als den nächsten Obama darstellt.. Als wäre Obama mehr Migrant als andere Politiker in den USA oder als wären sie auch nur mit der Hälfte des Charismas ausgestattet, das Obama mitbringt.. Die letzte, die sich in den Fußstapfen Obamas sieht, scheint 
Ich möchte nicht einen Präsidenten mit migriertem Hintergrund haben, sonder vor allem einen guten. Und das ist Frau Akgün mit Sicherheit nicht.
Die American Civil Liberties Union (kurz ACLU) hat dem Obama-Biden-Team eine detaillierte Forderungsliste überreicht, in der die Wiederherstellung Amerikas gefordert wird. “Actions For Restoring America: Transition Recommendations for President‐Elect Barack Obama” heißt das Dokument und es fängt mit einer desaströsen Zusammenfassung des aktuellen Zustands an:

Just a few days ago David over at Dialoginternational put the question out, if the Obama-election would put out the antiamericamism in Europe. He specially has a look at the European (German) left, which seems mostly high on Obamania ((everybody seems to have forgotten this term)). For starters he characterizes the current resentment of American policies rightly:
Yes, there has always been a current of anti-Americanism in Europe, but intensity over the past years had more to do with disastrous policies of the Bush administration than with some innate animosity towards America. Now that the Bush era has come to an end and Americans voted by a large margin for an African-American with progressive policies, will we find a more positive image of America in Germany – even among the German left?

..wie Fußballabende. Ich hatte mir mal vorgestellt, dass sie spannend sein könnten, aber wenn man einmal einen solchen verpasst hat, um sinnvoller weise früh schlafen zu gehen, dann weiß man wie sehr diese Abende tatsächlich überschätzt werden. Am Ende des Abends denkt man sich sowieso nur, “hab’s ich doch gesagt” oder “mann, das hätte ich ja nie gedacht”. Die diesjährige Wahl war im Rückblick vor allem ein voller Erfolg für die Wahlprognoseinstituteunternehmen und die unzähligen Analysten.
Einen der besseren Kommentare bezüglich des Kriegs in Georgien hat Jon Stewart abgegeben. Hier geht es vor allem um die Reaktion der US-Administration und der beiden ‘großen’ Präsidentschaftanwärter John McCain und Barack Obama:

It is time to secure all loose nuclear materials; to stop the spread of nuclear weapons; and to reduce the arsenals from another era. This is the moment to begin the work of seeking the peace of a world without nuclear weapons.
