The right to offend must come with at least one consequent right and one subsequent responsibility. People must have the right to be offended, and those bold enough to knowingly cause offense should be bold enough to weather the consequences, so long as the aggrieved respond within the law. Muslims were in effect being vilified twice–once through the original cartoons and then again for having the gall to protest them. Such logic recalls the words of the late South African black nationalist Steve Biko: “Not only are whites kicking us; they are telling us how to react to being kicked.”

When it comes to freedom of speech, the liberal/left should not sacrifice its values one inch to those who seek censorship on religious grounds. But the right to freedom of speech equates to neither an obligation to offend nor a duty to be insensitive. If our commitment to free speech is important, our belief in antiracism should be no less so.

The pages of this Jewish newspaper present a place for a small start by showing Muslims right here that though we too have the freedom to say anything we like, we choose to convey respect to our Muslim cousins. Printing something positive about Muhammad best does this.

There is a Hadith (oral tradition concerning the words and works of Muhammad) recorded by Bukhari in the name of Amer Bin Rabiha that reads as follows:

“A funeral procession passed us and the Prophet stood up for it. We said, ‘but Prophet of God, this is a funeral of a Jew.’ The Prophet responded, ‘rise.’ ”

One can search the writings of the ancient non-Jewish world for a more powerful example of a public display of respect for the humanity of the Jew. There simply is no more powerful statement than the single word uttered by Muhammad nearly 14 centuries ago.

Dear sirs, Assalamu Alaykum wa Rahmatuhllahi wa barakatuh,

i strongly urge you – as a muslim – not to counter-publish caricatures depicting the holocaust in the second world war. I really think, that this isn’t the way to go, especially since you are attacking Jews who – more or less across the board – defended muslim right to be offended by the depiction of prophet muhammad as a terrorist.

Please don’t misunderstand me, since the cartoons are really insulting (to the prophet (pbuh) and to the muslims in general) and should be banned or else dealt with, but thankfully here in europe – and as a result of these depictions – an honest discussion is on its way, many are putting themselves in the place of muslims and even defend that view and push for banning such insulting caricatures. This movement will be blown out, if you publish the caricatures depicting the holocaust. And with what aim? You will be only assuring the western media, that they have to counter publish and so on.. The real victims are the people on the street – muslims as well as non-muslims – who will feel more and more intimidated and insulted. So i strongly urge you to act more responsibly.

Further more: Did the prophet muhammad (pbuh) counter his jewish neighbour who threw dirt infront of the house of the prophet? He didn’t (instead he visited him, when he was ill.). Mainly that is because he was sent as “mercy to the world” (Al-Anbiya’ (21): 107). We as muslims have to continue in his footsteps in full observance of God’s commands and therefor in full respect to other people. If you dear brothers publish cartoons depicting the holocaust it could provoke anger and frustration between muslims and jews – in iran and elsewhere. If the result is violence then it is you who will be responsible for pushing them this way! Especially for jews in Iran this means, that the commandment of not harming any dhimmi (non-muslim living in and under protection of a muslim state) wouldn’t be followed through (“Whoever hurts a dhimmi, it is as if he has hurt me [the Prophet muhammad pbuh].”). This can’t be in anyones interest – especially not in the interest of muslims.

Awaiting a hopefully positive and mature reaction,

Assalamu Alaykum,

Omar Abo-Namous
