Firas Alkhatib – German media reacts

The story about Firas is reaching German language media – and apparently, some facts are lost in translation or in the improvisation attempts of German newspapers..

The image that showed up all over the US on posters, T-Shirts and sticker was not the making of an Obama-hater, but a handicraft of an american-palestinian binational.

Firas is not a binational, but of Palestinian roots!

The 20-year-old Firas Alkhateeb is an apolitical person. He told the Los Angeles Times, that he didn’t even vote last november. The Obama-Joker image originated in a tutorage about image processing. The basis was the Time Magazin cover image of Barack Obama.

Two errors here. First the small ones: He manipulated the image using a tutorial he found online, not within a tutorage. Then there’s the thing about him being apolitical. Reading the original article in the LA Times, you wouldn’t think so: He names a Representative, he would have liked to vote for (Dennis Kucinich), his family follows Middle Eastern politics and he tries to evaluate the Obama administration’s domestic and international policies – all-in-all based on the LA Times article he seems to be the kind of guy, who cares about politics. Still he didn’t vote, which they quote correctly, but yet again, this he explains in the interview:

“I abstained from voting in November,” he wrote in an e-mail. “Living in Illinois, my vote means close to nothing as there was no chance Obama would not win the state.” If he had to choose a politician to support, Alkhateeb said, it would be Ohio Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich.
