Firas Alkhateeb – Family got it’s own celebrity

How shocked was I to see, that the guy, who famously modified an Obama picture on a Times-magazine into the Batman-foe “The Joker” played by the late Heath Ledger is in fact a direct cousin of mine. Though i never met him in person1 i know his mother very well2. The picture of Joker-Obama was made popular by some yet-unknown guy3 who captioned it with “socialism”, retouched some background out and hung it all over Los Angeles. Yesterday the story about the origin of the image broke in the Los Angeles Times.
The article itself is very nicely written4. I can only imagine what would’ve been written, if the same thing happened in Germany.. Have a read.
Also, i think he expresses his views quite eloquently5 and the LA Times does a great job of letting him have his distinct opinion:
Although Alkhateeb claims he was making no political statement with the artwork, he’s plugged into the Washington debate. Though born in the United States, his Palestinian family closely follows Middle Eastern politics.
“I think he’s definitely doing better than Bush was,” Alkhateeb said of Obama. Alkhateeb’s views on foreign relations align with the Democrats, he said, while he prefers Republican ideals on domestic issues.
Alkhateeb’s assessment of Obama: “In terms of domestic policy, I don’t think he’s really doing much good for the country right now,” he said. “We don’t have to ‘hero worship’ the guy.”
There are many articles about the case and i hear, there’ll be TV-interviews6. The Chicago Tribune has a nice and more private article about Firas and family:
His 16-year-old sister, Huda, was sleeping over at a friend’s house when he made the connection. She said, “In the morning, I knew something was up because my mother and my brother came to pick me up, which was strange. I get in the car and he goes, ‘I’m famous.’ As soon as he said it, I knew he did something totally stupid — ‘What stupid thing did you get yourself into, Firas?’ “
His mother, Sanaa Alqudsi, was angry.
“I am a fan of Obama,” she said. “All I am thinking is, ‘Why are you making him look that way in a picture? Why do a picture that could be taken so badly?’ Obama is not a bad guy!”

I still have one beef with Firas: why use evil commercial “Photoshop”?
