This is a translation of the German article, my wife just wrote about Marwa E. and her murder in a district court hearing in Dresden.
Since 2005 the pharmacist Marwa E. lives together with her Husband Ali in Dresden. There she works at a drugstore and he is at the renowned Max-Planck-Institute on a scholarship.
In august 2008 Marwa E. (32) comes in contact with Alexander W. (28) at a playground in the district of Johannstadt in Dresden. After she asks him to clear a swing for her son, he insults her with “islamist”, “terrorist” and “bitch”. Marwa E. is Egyptian, muslim and wears a head scarf.
Marwa E. wants to fight back against those insults. It gets to a trial, in which the district court convicts Alexander W. to pay a fine of 780 €.
An appeal hearing ensues, initiated by the prosecution considering the preceding verdict too lenient and the defendant still undiscerning. So, at 9:30 on the 1. July the trial before the district court of Dresden starts.
W., who before wasn’t represented by a lawyer, got the assigned counsel Markus Haselier. The 12th criminal chamber chaired by judge Tom Maciejewski compelled him to do that, because of his inability to represent himself, as it was put about (Sächsische Zeitung)
Because Alexander W. had again severely attacked Marwa E. on 1st of July, the prosecution was pressing for a jail sentence. After one hour the situation escalated, just when Marwa E. finished with her testimony. Alexander W. springs at her and stabs her 18 times within 30 seconds. At the same time he shouts “You have no right to live”. At that time Marwa E. is pregnant in her 3rd month, her 3yr-old son witnesses the bloody crime as well as her husband, who in trying to help her gets critically wounded. Accidentally he also gets shot by a police man. Ali O. meanwhile is out of critical danger, alhamdulillah. The 3yr-old son is being cared for.
While many media reports still speculate over the (very obvious) motive and entitle some of their articles wrongly with “Murder over quarrel about swing”, a speaker of the prosecution makes the following announcement about the culprit:
Thursday evening a prosecution speaker said on the TV-broadcaster MDR, the culprit was a ‘notorious xenophobe’. (FR-Online)
Nabil Yacoub, previous manager of the counsel for immigrant affairs, made the following background of the case public to the Sächsische Zeitung:
The 72-yrs old Egyptian has been concerned with the worries of immigrants for years. He says, the Egyptian family that was harmed so severely has been living for four years in Dresden.
(…)
The woman was a pharmacist, her husband pharmacologist at the Max-Planck-Institute. “He is on a scholarship of his government. Already the attack is making headlines in Egypt.” The embassy has stepped in.
(…)
Wifes of other stipendiaries, that like Marwa S. wear a head scarf, were already complaining over hostilities. “We want to encourage them to approach authorities, so that the administration is up to date.”, said Yacoub. (Sächsische Zeitung)
Many muslim women, who are being attacked or discriminated against because of their clothing, do not dare to approach the authorities. Therefore the counsels for immigrant affairs in many communes try to encourage these women to raise their voice. Marwa E. decided to not tolerate her being insulted as “terrorist” or “islamist”. In three months she wanted to go back to Egypt with her husband.

Thanks for the translation! I have been trying to find some information as to HOW Axel could stab Marwa over a period of 30 seconds, then stab her husband 3 times without the police or court security doing anything… and then they only intervened to shoot the husband when he tried to save his wife. Are there any articles/news stories that could shed light on this mystery?
Thanks

@loolt: The behaviour of the shooting policeman is subject to investigation according to the prosecuting attorney. We’ll have to wait for the results.

Thanks Kathrin, I will certainly be interested in the outcome.. but am still baffled at the fact that no mention of this case has appeared on the BBC.

I am catching up on the week’s news – could only listen to snatches on the radio (mdrinfo and BBC World Service) all week.
The story of Marwa El-Sherbini is heart-breaking. If I could, I would be keeping vigil with all those other people in Dresden today in grief at what has happened.
On the German radio I heard the attacker described as of Russian origin. This may explain some of the paralysis there seems to have been in government circles. There is a saying that “the oppressed will always oppress”. The attacker is not only sub judice, which restricts copmment, but seemingly belongs to another minority in Germany. His mental state may well have been influenced by his own position in society.
All I can do is pray for this society and for everyone of us to live together in it recognising each other as human and respecting each other on that basis as we all are shaken together in a kaleidoscope of cultures.
